Hi, I’m Mel!
I want to help you have the best website possible for your business
I have been working in the web industry for almost 20 years! That’s a long time seeing what does and doesn’t work.
Did you know that it isn’t the technology or your graphic design that will make your website awesome?
There is a combination of many things that all need to come together if you want your website to work for your business. After working with large companies for many years, I have recently spent time with people who have small businesses. I have listened to stories of their struggles with finding good web developers and the challenges they have because they do not understand about websites.
I get that you are busy and websites may not be your thing, your “genius zone” or your priority.
That’s why I want to help. If you have gone to the trouble of creating a website you need to take a bit of time to learn some basics to ensure it is going to provide your business with results – and to ensure that you haven’t wasted your time and money.
I have created ‘Clarity By Design’ to enable small businesses, bloggers & entrepreneurs just like you, to have an awesome, converting website that performs to its maximum.
So if you want to know a little more about me and my background, keep reading……
- I live in Adelaide with my husband and two gorgeous boys
- I love geeky, technical, electronic things
- I binge on Netflix crime dramas
- I have scanned and categorised recipes from my 100+ cookbooks
- I own a PS3, PS4 and XBOX
- I run a website for fun in my spare time
I’m not a typical geek though – I love working and communicating with people and speak in a language they can understand.
With active boys that play basketball, football & baseball, helping with homework, running GrubFinder (my hobby website) and working part time, life is busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The early days
After growing up in Adelaide and completing a Computer Systems Engineering Degree I moved to Sydney at 21 and started my first job working as a programmer in Defence and working on systems for submarines and war ships.
In 1998 when Google was only in Beta and everyone was using Yahoo and AltaVista I was given an opportunity to work for a small start up where I would learn to build websites. How much more exciting did that sound? I leapt at the chance and have never looked back.
In my years working for that start up I helped build a Content Management System (CMS) which enabled non technical users to build websites. That product and our company was later bought by IBM and is still around today powering corporate websites. I worked with many clients over the years, helping them work out what their customers needed, what the businesses wanted and then planning and building award winning websites that delivered results.
Some of the clients I have worked with over the years:
Television Corporation of Singapore, ASX
New Zealand Police
The next decade
In 2006 I moved back to Adelaide with my husband and then, 2 1/2 year old son. Sydney had been great, but it was time for the next chapter. I continued working for IBM from my home, writing training courses and providing support to clients all over the world with technical white papers that I authored.
In 2010 I branched out on my own and Clarity By Design was born. I was employed by large clients such as SA Health, Woolworths and New Zealand Police to help them understand their end users and then build their websites. I also started working with smaller clients such as not for profits, small service based businesses and local sporting clubs. This was when I taught myself Drupal and WordPress.
To help me learn more about SEO, social media & day to day running of websites I built myself a website called GrubFinder. It allows people to search for takeaway menus. GrubFinder is still my testing ground. It started with just me using it and has now had over 6 million visitors with no paid advertising. Every day it has between 2000-5000 visitors.
Clarity By Design
I love all things digital – techie – web related. I love learning. I love helping people who don’t understand how it all works, enabling them to grow their businesses online. I’m passionate about helping as many people succeed in the online space as I can. There is not enough time in my day to help everyone one-on-one with their websites and I’m hoping through this website I can still pass on all of my learnings.
“There is nothing like learning from your own mistakes and I have made a few.”
